A 24-year-old woman holding her 10-day-old son was shot dead by a stray bullet as she was standing in the doorway of her Gate City, Ala., apartment Monday afternoon, police said. Sherri Williams' baby was unhurt. Authorities said two men were having a verbal argument at a grocery store nearby and when the conflict escalated one of the men chased the other down the street and fired his weapon. Williams was shot in the chest, and had fallen onto a couch inside her apartment with her newborn son still in her arms, her uncle told The Birmingham News. Birmingham police are searching Gate City and surrounding areas for the gunman.
