Kerry: Deal Has “Full Ability” to Rid Syria of Arsenal

Secretary of State John Kerry said Sunday a U.S.-Russia accord has the “full ability” to strip Syria of its chemical weapons, NBC News reported. Speaking in Jerusalem where he was meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss the agreement, Kerry also said that the "threat of force is real" adding "we cannot have hollow words in the conduct of international affairs." The deal drew a guarded response from the Israeli leader. In a speech before the meeting, Netanyahu said the agreement would be judged on whether it achieved "the complete destruction" of the Syrian government's chemical weapons stockpiles, and he pointed toward Iran's nuclear program as another test of world resolve. The deal Kerry reached with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Saturday called for Syrian President Bashar Assad to account for his chemical arsenal within a week and let international inspectors eliminate it all by the middle of 2014.
