Girl Struck, Killed by Oncoming Train While Sitting on Tracks Listening to Music

Police are deeming the crash as an "unfortunate accident"

A 14-year-old girl was struck and killed by a train Friday in Santa Fe Springs while sitting on the tracks listening to music, authorities said.

The crash police are deeming as an "unfortunate accident" was reported at 8:47 p.m. in the 11300 block of Rivera Road, said Lt. Steve Dean of the Whittier Police Department, which also patrols Santa Fe Springs.

The girl was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead shortly after 10 p.m., Dean said.

Witnesses at the scene told police the girl was listening to music when she was struck, according to Dean. It wasn't immediately clear if she was using headphones or something else that would impair her hearing.

Dean said he did not know what kind of train struck the girl but other officials said they believed it was a freight train.
