Security Officer Wounds Man With Knife Outside Downtown Courthouse

A man who allegedly approached security officers while armed with a sharp object was shot in a hand Tuesday outside a federal courthouse in downtown Los Angeles.

The shooting was reported about 2:15 p.m. at the federal courthouse at 350 W. First Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

"An individual holding a sharp object approached court security officers and an ensuing altercation led to a court security officer-involved shooting," according to a statement from FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller. "The individual sustained injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening and he is being treated at a local hospital."

The FBI and U.S. Marshals Service were investigating the shooting, with assistance from the LAPD. First Street was closed to traffic between Broadway and Hill Street following the shooting.
