It's Bonsai-a-thon at the Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botantical Gardens over the Feb. 26-27, 2011 weekend.

The Oscars may be rightfully dominating this time of year -- they're on Sunday, Feb. 27, if you haven't been through Hollywood lately, or turned on the television, or gone online -- and that is right and good and the way it has been for over eight decades.

And yet. Sometimes we need an antidote to flashing bulbs and oversprayed hair. We crave quiet, and trees, and the beauty and epicness of the natural world. Lots of trees. (Not too many trees on the red carpet, normally; or at least that we've seen.)

Bonsai-a-thon is happening over the Feb. 26-27 weekend at the Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens. There will be demos and exhibits and a bonsai bazaar. It's a weekend for both fans who simply like to admire the treely art form, and it is for passionate people who cultivate bonsai at home.

If you haven't seen the Huntington's exquisite bonsai area, you should definitely make a plan to do so, if not this weekend then soon. It is a fine and contemplative spot, with some of the loveliest limbs and trunkery anywhere. We like the junipers best. You?

We also like this particular weekend because the Oscars are an end-of-winter signaler. So is Bonsai-a-thon. Thank you, to both happenings, be they theater- or garden-based.
