Police on Sunday were searching for a man who opened fire on a car that had hit a pedestrian in an unincorporated part of South Los Angeles.
The California Highway Patrol said the pedestrian, Alexis Brooks, 28, stepped in front of a southbound Mazda on Western Ave. near 108th Street late Saturday.
Brooks, who entered the street "for unknown reasons," according to the CHP, was hit by the Mazda and thrown into northbound traffic.
There, she was hit by another car. She died at the scene.
At some point during the incident, a man began shooting at the driver of the Mazda, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which took over the investigation.
Keetha Knox, 37, the driver of the Mazda, drove home before calling police. She was not arrested for hit-and-run driving.
LASD watch commander Shawn Shaw said detectives were still searching for the gunman.
