Thousands of Skiers, Snowboarders Hit SoCal Slopes

On opening day at Mountain High in Wrightwood, thousands packed the slopes under sunny skies

With about a foot and a half of man-made snow, thousands of skiers and snowboarders hit the slopes at Mountain High as it opened its 16th season on Sunday.

Newbies and veterans alike enjoyed sunny skies and at the Wrightwood ski resort.

"I'm a new player, just fall down all the time,” said first-timer Danny Wang.

Tom Sedeka, of Monterey Park, is a self professed expert on the slope.

"I'm snow skating here,” he said. “Snow skating is more fun than snowboarding because you don't have any bindings."

Opening day was all about being with the family for Marcia Billings.

"We are just excited to get ready and start the season," she said as her 6-year-old daughter, McKenna, said she had the thrill of her life skiing and making snowballs.

Many are expected to make their way down the slopes at Mountain High until the end of the season in April.

The slopes opened after a night when sub-freezing temperatures prompted freeze warnings across high desert areas in Southern California.

Another alert was set for Sunday night and into early Monday morning before forecasters predict sunny skies.

Mountain temperatures were expected Monday to hit the low 70s in the lower elevations and up to the mid 50s in the higher elevations.

Mountain High's long-range forecast shows a low pressure system possibly moving through the area next weekend with another chance for snow around Nov. 17 or so.

The mountain could also see a more significant storm move through Thanksgiving, the forecast said.
