When June wraps up, and Fourth of July arrives, and the first day of summer is officially receding in the distance, one can say, with confidence, that it is time to dig into the delights of the season, before autumn blows into town.
One of summer's eternal delights is a later nighttime vibe, a vibe that Grand Central Market has embraced on a few fronts for the summer of 2016.
As for the "later" part? The historic public market, which is approaching its 100th birthday in 2017, is keeping it going through to 10 p.m. each night. ("Keeping it going"=food is for sale, and drinks, too, and there's often music or movies.)
This is indeed a change for the stall-lined scene, which occasionally kept a few spots open past sundown when the Million Dollar Theatre was holding a special event.
On the food scene, a bevy of biteries have special dishes they're only serving in the evening hours. Look for braised pork belly at Belcampo Meat Co. (shaved fennel, pickled onion salad, morel cream sauce, and celery lend zing) and fried oyster po' boys at Bombo.
And on the sweet-meets-savory side? Olio has a fire-roasted apple and thyme foccacia.
Again, these are noshes that belong solely to the night, so arrive according to the clock if that's your fancy.

On the festive front? Movies, djs, drag queen bingo, Trivia Tuesdays, and live tunes are also filling up the entertainment, have-a-good-time schedule, with "LA Story" screening on July 6 and Jordie Lane making music on July 9.
The Broadway-based market isn't the only downtown landmark changing it up for the summer; just a hop/skip over (read: a long walk or quick drive), Union Station will have several Saturday nights of concerts, DJs, and art happenings, beginning on July 2.
