A man who was struck by gunfire after struggling with a Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy ran inside a 7-Eleven store early Wednesday and took the clerk hostage, according to the sheriff's department.
The string of events began when a deputy in the city of Industry stor heard collision at about 3:20 a.m. in the 2600 block of Pellissier Place. A black sedan crashed into a parked vehicle outside the business.
The deputy noticed a man and woman outside the vehicle arguing, according to Sgt. A. Kneubuhler of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Industry Station. The deputy attempted to intervene and the man charged the deputy and a struggle began for the deputy's weapon, Kneubuhler said.
The deputy was able to gain control of his weapon and shoot the suspect, who then ran into a nearby 7-Eleven where he grabbed a clerk and dragged her into a storage room and held her hostage, he said. The clerk was able to escape the suspect's grasp and run out of the store.
The suspect, struck by a round in the upper body, crawled out a few minutes later and surrendered, Kneubuhler said.
The woman who was with the suspect was transported to a hospital in unknown condition. The deputy was not injured.
Investigators are attempting to determine whether the man was involved in an earlier crash on a nearby freeway.
