An off-duty Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy was robbed of cash and a cell phone while asleep this morning inside his personal vehicle, which was parked in front of a home in Santa Ana.
Following the robbery in the 900 block of South Hickory Street, a friend called police at 4:01 a.m. to report that the deputy was missing after someone other than the lawman answered his cell phone, said Santa Ana police Sgt. Sergio Gutierrez.
The deputy drove away from the scene and returned about a hour and a half later, where he was being interviewed by Santa Ana police about the robbery, Gutierrez said.
"He (the off-duty deputy) does have some minor injuries that looked like he was punched,'' he said.
The off-duty sheriff's deputy was not taken to an area hospital, the sergeant said, adding that he had no other immediate information.
