Overly Hairsprayed People Posing Awkwardly

Local character, colorful Western-shirt aficionado, droll jester, and all-around LA lover Charles Phoenix puts on many various events -- Christmas-y slide shows featuring found photos of suburbia from decades long gone, his boogie-down Moonlight Rollerway nights, those famous downtown Disneyland tours -- but we like his SoCal slide shows best.

Why? Well, while we're sweet on everything this comedian-with-an-eye-toward-history does, including his gorgeous coffee table books spotlighting the kitschy America of yore, the Southern California shows always seem to feature places we know and adore, or what used occupy various points around town. (Really, the used car lot we drive by every day was once a sparkly, Googied-out grocery store?) We guess we could call it hometown-ish pride, or just curiousity about our immediate surroundings. Whatever it is, every Angeleno with a devotion to the mid-century side of our sprawling city should definitely grab a seat at Phoenix's one-of-a-kind retro slide-a-thon.
