Wind is a subject Angelenos love to discuss, and no wonder; not only are we visited upon by the world-famous Santa Anas every so often (some would translate "every so often" as "way too frequently") but just your ordinary, run-of-the-mill winds have a way of coming through and easily snapping our branches.
But, every once in a blue moon -- or bright, ocean sun -- a windy day is a welcome thing. It certainly will be much desired on Sunday, March 11 when the Festival of the Kite returns for its 38th year at Redondo Pier.
A 38th year is nothing to sniff at (well, sniff if there's pollen in the wind). That makes the Festival of the Kite one of oldest kite festivals around. The beach party's longevity can be attributed to a couple of factors. One? Beach party. Two? A lot of people show up with all kinds of colorful kites.
And three? It is free. (Start a free festival and your chances of a good run are greatly improved.)
There are also a pair of contest, one involving yo-yos and one involving a Hot Dog on a Stick eating competition. Honestly, can summer be far off once the Hot Dog on a Stick contests start to rear their mustardy selves? It's a happy, deep-fried harbinger, for sure.
