Police are asking for the public's help in identifying a suspect who stabbed an American Staffordshire terrier Friday in Santa Paula.
Passersby spotted the dog lying near the area of 14th and Saticoy streets bleeding profusely at about 6 p.m, according to Santa Paula police and Diane Rowley of the Santa Paula Animal Rescue Center, where the dog was taken.
The terrier, named T -Rex, suffered stab wounds to his neck, chest and face and was transported to emergency care in grave condition, Rowley said.
The owner of the dog alerted police of the incident after he came home from work and noticed a puddle of blood in front of his house, according to Rowley.
The dog was to undergo several surgeries and was reported in good condition.
The Santa Paula Animal Rescue Center will take over responsibility for the dog after his owner said he was unable to pay for the injured terrier.
Rowley said it is unknown if the dog will experience any hearing loss after one of the stab wounds he suffered was close to the dog’s ear.
