Metro received $22 million in federal funding to improve stations in downtown and South Los Angeles.
The Willowbrook/Rosa Parks station in South LA was awarded $10.25 million in funding to increase station capacity, enhance connections and allow safer access.
Improvements that will be made at the Willowbrook Rosa Parks station could begin as early as 2016.
A second "Tiger" grant was given to the metro station at First Street/Central Avenue in Little Tokyo. The $11.8 million grant will help fund an improvement project aimed at creating new crosswalks, bike lanes and streetscaping which will support light rail to the Arts District.
Metro said in a news release that the agency will continue to pursue funding for another large project that could include a new bus center, sheriff substation and a "pedestrian plaza."
Metro said the application process was competitive – only 72 projects from across the country were selected to receive a portion of $600 million.
