Gibson Meets with Cops Over Extort Claim: Sheriff

Mel’s talking -- but he’s not telling all.

Oscar-winner Mel Gibson interviewed with investigators Sunday, but only discussed his claims that his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva tried to blackmail him, a spokesman for the Los Angeles sheriff's department told news outlets on Tuesday.

“It had nothing to do with the domestic violence investigation,” Whitmore told the New York Daily News. “It only concerned the allegations of extortion."

According to TMZ, which first reported news of the meeting, Gibson and his lawyer submitted text messages and emails to back up their case.

A rep for Grigorieva declined comment to The Associated Press on the meeting. But the 40-year-old Russian singer lashed out against Gibson’s extortion allegations Friday in a video posted by E! News.

"Mel is a liar!" Grigorieva said. "He's lying. There's no extortion and there's no texts, and no emails, OK? And I'm fighting for my child and he's just a liar, and it will come up in the court, just wait."

Earlier this month the Los Angeles sheriff’s department announced they’ve opened a domestic violence probe into whether Gibson harmed Grigorieva in a Jan. 6 incident and have interviewed the musician. Neither person has been charged with a crime.

Whitmore, the sheriff’s spokesman, told People mag Tuesday that cops would “like to speak to him” about the domestic abuse allegations, “but he has a Fifth Amendment right not to speak with us."

As part of the investigation, detectives have received audio recordings from the feuding pair’s closed child custody case over their 8-month-old daughter, Lucia, and have said they are working to authenticate the tapes.

It has not been confirmed that the tapes in either investigation include those that have been posted on a near daily basis for weeks by the celebrity website RadarOnline.

On clips from the profanity-laced tapes, a man who sounds like Gibson is heard berating a woman said to be Grigorieva in several arguments.

While unverified, the recordings featuring racial and sexist epithets have left Gibson’s reputation in tatters.

Grigorieva has said she did not leak the tapes to Radar.
