A suspected gunman is in critical condition after being struck by police gunfire in Boyle Heights Wednesday afternoon in an altercation that was caught on cellphone camera.
LAPD officers responded to a report of a man with gun near Marengo Street and North State Street just before 5:30 p.m.
Investigators said officers were forced to shoot when the man pulled out a gun.

"They told him put your hands up, but no. He reached in. He pulled out a gun. I seen it. I don't know if I was a BB gun or whatever it was but yeah he did," witness Richard Montes said. "They did what they had to do, you know?"
A woman riding with her family in a car nearby recorded the incident on her cellphone and shared the footage with NBC4.
As for what happened, LAPD says their probe into the shooting is just getting started.
"Officers were not injured in this and this is an ongoing investigation," LAPD Lt. Andrew Neiman said.
The unidentified suspected gunman was taken to a hospital and was in critical condition as of Wednesday night.
