Mother, Daughter Hurt When Mercedes Slams Into Garden Grove Restaurant

A woman and her 10-year-old daughter were the only customers inside the restaurant at the time, police said

A 73-year-old driver attempting to turn onto a Garden Grove highway struck a car, then lost control of her Mercedes-Benz and plowed into a restaurant, injuring a mother and daughter inside, police said.

The driver was attempting to make a left turn from Yockey Street onto Garden Grove Boulevard about 3 p.m. Monday when she hit another car, police said. That sent the four-door Mercedes careening into the glass doors of Pho 86 Restaurant, which is located in a shopping plaza.

A 37-year-old woman who works three doors down and her 10-year-old daughter were the only customers inside the restaurant at the time, police said. They were taken to UC Irvine Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Witnesses said the girl suffered cuts to her arms.

The driver was taken to Garden Grove Hospital and Medical Center, where she was treated and released.

The occupants of the car the woman struck were not hurt, police said.

The restaurant owner, Francis Nguyen, was seated in a chair on the sidewalk. He heard the initial crash and jumped out of the way.

"Somehow she didn't put the brake, she put the gas. I just jumped out - she was right to my face," Nguyen said.

A business next door also sustained damage.
