Weekend: Sawdust Opens

The venerable art festival marks its 45th year.

SAWDUST ART FESTIVAL: Summer arrived just a couple of days back, but we can call the season officially on with the opening of this venerable, multi-month happening in Laguna Beach. We like the glassblowing and the crunchy, nearly iconic ground cover; we also like getting a jump on holiday shopping. Mom's been wanting a handmade mug set, we think. Opens Friday, June 24

LONG BEACH BAYOU FESTIVAL: Oh yeah. The accordions are plentiful for this one, and while dancing isn't mandatory, you'll want to kick it uponce the tunes get going. And there are *a lot* of tunes going over the two day party (oh, and a tasty French Quarter section, too). Get to Rainbow Lagoon Park on Saturday, June 25 and Sunday, June 26

NUTS FOR MUTTS: The nutty categories for this popular walk-a-thon and fundraiser always make the headlines, as do the celebrity judges. We think everyone probably believes that their pooch has a lock on "Fastest Eater," but there are certainly quite a few contests to enter. "Best Kisser" is also a category. Will some pup get to snuggle with judge Shirley Jones? Lucky. Sunday, June 26

FREE PALACE TOUR: The Palace Theatre on Broadway will be hitting its centennial soon, and is getting gussied up (read: renovated) in anticipation. Broadway 100 is giving cinephiles and theater lovers a sneak peek of the progress, and offering some history on the theater district, too. Oh, and it is a free thing. Free! Saturday, June 25

FRIDAY NIGHT SINGING: Whoa. Two sing-alongs for two pop culture favorites at two different spots on the same night. "Grease" is playing at the Hollywood Bowl on Friday, June 24; "Glee" is the featured theme at the Disney Concert Hall's Keck Amphitheatre on Friday, June 24. Everybody? Please dress up. It isn't mandatory, but makes things rather zesty, right?
