A convicted sex offender accused of making threatening and obscene phone calls to the family of an 80-year-old woman he raped a decade ago was captured in Palm Springs Wednesday, after authorities issued an urgent alert to find him.
Dennis Michael McKenzie, 55, cut off his GPS monitoring device this month after being paroled to a halfway house in Long Beach, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department. A felony warrant was issued for his arrest.
He was captured in Palm Springs about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. Investigators said "extensive media coverage" allowed a citizen to spot McKenzie and call authorities.
The 55-year-old has made more than 50 threatening phone calls this month to the victim's family, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.
McKenzie has a history of visiting Long Beach, Banning, Palm Springs and the Lake Arrowhead area of San Bernardino County, according to the sheriff's department.
McKenzie was convicted in April 2004 of sexual penetration with a foreign object with force or fear and elder abuse. His last known address was an apartment in the 2200 block of West Wardlow Road in Long Beach, according to the national sex offender database.
Anyone with information in the case is urged to call 909-336-0600.
