A dead body, the result of a suicide, was found in Los Angeles' Griffith Park on Monday afternoon, according to authorities.
The body was located about 60 feet off a trail below the famed Griffith Observatory, according to an initial report from the Los Angeles Fire Department.
It was reported at 1:35 p.m. Monday, according to the fire department's Erik Scott, who referred media inquiries to police and park rangers.
A spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department said at about 2:20 p.m. that detectives were headed to the scene.
The department's Twitter account for the LAPD's Northeast division tweeted that it was "apparent suicide by hanging." A watch commander there confirmed at about 3 p.m. that the body was the result of a suicide.
The body was described only as male, according to City News Service.
The steep trail leading to and from the observatory is a popular hiking and walking destination.
