Red the "very adoptable dog" is recovering after gender reassignment surgery
A Pomeranian puppy who has the unusual distinction of having undergone a sex change will be given a home next week.
The puppy, named Red, is recovering after gender-reassignment surgery saved the dog from euthanasia. The dog was born with partially formed male and female reproductive organs and required surgery to prevent infection and reduce the risk of cancer.
At least 15 people applied to adopt the San Bernardino pooch, the Press-Enterprise reported:
A decision on who will get to adopt the dog will be made Aug. 20, according to Sharon Blechinger, director of the Helping Every Animal League (HEAL), a nonprofit support group for the San Bernardino City Animal Shelter. Blechinger paid for the $1,165 surgery out of her own pocket.
"I just felt he was a very adoptable dog," Blechinger told the Press-Enterprise.
Red is now considered an "altered male" dog and is making a quick recovery according Patti Harris, the puppy's foster mom.
"Even after his surgery, he was raring to go. It didn't even phase him at all," she said.
Anyone seeking to adopt the Red or other needy animals can contact HEAL through their website.
