Bruce Hensel, M.D., is the Emmy Award-winning medical, health and science editor/reporter for NBC4's "Channel 4 News."
Dr. Hensel joined NBC4 in June 1987 with very unique qualifications -- a practicing physician who is also an experienced journalist. It is these qualifications that have enabled Dr. Hensel to break numerous exclusive stories and investigative reports, as well as provide the latest in medical information to NBC4 viewers. Dr. Hensel also contributes medical and health reports to the NBC network and to various NBC affiliates.
In 2007, Dr. Hensel received the Radio Television News Association's Golden Mike Award for Best Documentary for his work on "On the Verge," a half-hour examining breakthrough medical treatments. Dr. Hensel has also won four Los Angeles area Emmy Awards for his work on the following specials: "Health Fax" (1988), "4 Your Health" (1998): "Bioterrorism: Lines of Defense" (2002), and "Autism: The Hidden Epidemic." (2006). In his 22 years at NBC4, Dr. Hensel has won numerous other awards and honors, including the Best Show Award from the American Heart Association, The City of Los Angeles Commendation for Outstanding Contributions and Achievements in Health Care Reporting, as well as awards from The California Medical Association, and the American Diabetes Association
In addition to his position at NBC4, Dr. Hensel is a Board Certified in two medical specialties -- Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine. He has served as a co-director of two emergency rooms in Southern California and is a full Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and is one of the founders of the High Ethics and the Internet Committee, formed for the protection of privacy and to insure validity of health information on the Internet. He recently hosted the Dr Bruce Show on KABC radio and has been a contributing editor for Family Circle Magazine and The Ladies Home Journal.
Dr. Hensel is also a film producer and a series writer and developer. He is the creator and Co- executive producer of the award-winning film "The Opposite Sex: Rene's Story." This film, which debuted in 2004 on Showtime, follows the journey of a woman who seeks a sex change operation. The program received critical acclaim from television critics and garnered the Grand Jury Award from The Outfest Film Festival in Los Angeles. He is the author of the book Smart Medicine: How to Prevent Medical Mistakes and Get the Most Out of Your Medical Care," published by Putnam.
Dr. Hensel graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political theory. He studied journalism at UCLA and Columbia University and attended medical school at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons. He received his internship and residency training at Wadsworth Veterans Administration Hospital and at UCLA.
